Twelve years ago, Spitfire Audio released Albion: a powerful virtual instrument that promised to give film and TV composers everything they needed to write sophisticated orchestral scores. Recorded at the legendary AIR Lyndhurst studio and featuring luscious ensemble patches comprised of strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion, as well as pianos and sound‑design effects, Albion really raised the bar for orchestral sample libraries.
While the first Albion instrument promised versatility, Spitfire soon followed it up with two somewhat more specialised offerings: first Loegria, based around a more modest chamber orchestra line‑up, and then Iceni, an “apocalyptic low‑end orchestra” instrument designed to drive intense, action‑based scores.
As powerful as those first three instruments were, Spitfire eventually felt they could do better, and with the introduction in 2016 of a new ensemble‑based instrument, Albion One, the original Albion library was discontinued. Much the same happened with Loegria and Iceni, but many composers still felt an affinity with those earlier instruments, and so now, to mark the 12th anniversary of the original Albion, Spitfire Audio have made the entire collection available for the first time ever.
