Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Sarah Grindley

I retired from work 5 years ago. Initially I was reluctant to retire because I was worried I wouldn’t have enough to fill my time! How wrong I was, my daughter soon had her first child and wow I loved being a grandparent.

I now have two gorgeous grandchildren, Ewan 7 and Henry 4. I help my daughter and her husband with childcare Monday to Friday.

I have such a strong bond with both boys. I love taking them on days out.

Sarah Higton, Derbyshire

Dear Sarah

Thank you for telling us about your retirement and sharing your pictures of your lovely grandchildren. They are so sweet, and it’s lovely they are bringing you so much joy and happiness.

We would love to hear from other readers who have recently retired and see your photographs.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Stunning view of Beer beach
from ‘Grandads Bench’

Hi, my name is Chloe. I’m 26 and from Gloucestershire. I wanted to write about my childhood family holidays and why I cherish them so much.

Every summer my grandparents (and sometimes my great aunt) took my brother, mum and I on a beautiful British staycation to a place called Beer.

Unbeknownst to me as a little girl, its name is not derived from the alcoholic beverage, but from the Old English word bearu, meaning ‘grove’ and refers to the original forestation that surrounded the village.

Beer is situated on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and its picturesque cliffs form a part of the South West Coastal Path.

Unfortunately, a part of this path collapsed a few years back, so it is no longer accessible… but I’m glad to have fond memories of walking it. When I close my eyes to reminisce I see myself climbing the rocks and boulders on the beach at low tide to reach the town of Seaton. There was always an element of risk involved in our adventures; but accompanied by our grandfather we felt fearless!

We would then spend the afternoon at Pecorama (a family tourist attraction known for its miniature railway and stunning park and gardens) before taking the back roads lined with huge houses back to our rental cottage in time for dinner.

We often ate out and were spoilt for restaurant choice with 2 pubs – The Anchor Inn and The Dolphin, an Italian, Indian and Fish & Chips being our personal favourites. Let’s not forget the ice cream shops and bakeries.

Most mornings we went and had breakfast on the beach – at our favourite café called Ducky’s. I’d have a full English, just like my grandad, minus the mushrooms and black pudding! This would set us up for a day of fun filled outdoor activities.

From swimming, to body-boarding, rowing to rock-pooling and skimming pebbles in the sea… There was so much to do and explore, my brother Tommy and I never got bored. We rarely let the weather stop us. But if there was a torrential downpour you’d probably find me buying yesterday’s doughnuts for 10p out of my own money!

I am grateful to my grandparents for giving us the opportunity to experience what the UK has to offer and for all the wonderful memories we made. From age 14, I went on to experience some fabulous holidays abroad before becoming chronically ill and bedbound, but Devon will always have that special place in my heart. I hope I get to visit again one day.

Chloe Leanne Brookes

Dear Chloe

Thank you for sharing your childhood memories of Beer on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, it must have been very special. Your grandparents are wonderful for giving you such marvellous holidays every summer.

I am so sorry to hear you are bedbound. I hope you get a chance to do some lovely things again with your family. Sending you all our very best wishes and a warm welcome to Sixtyplusurfers.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

David Aitken

I’m 77 now, so I thought it was time to investigate this subject.

The Pleasures of Old Age

“Old age ain’t no place for sissies,” said Bette Davis, who lived till she was 81, and still had Bette Davis eyes.

According to geriatricians, who try to discover new things about old people, our early and middle years are just a preliminary training period for the pleasures of being an elderly adult – what they refer to as “the happy senescence phenomenon”.

After 40 or more years of hoping to become the chairman of the company, the time finally comes to sit in a rocking chair and enjoy the company of friends rather than the musical chairs of office politics.  With age comes wisdom, claimed Oscar Wilde, before adding that “for some, age comes alone.”  When I was young, wisdom was beyond my grasp, and well done, you, if you managed to get hold of some, or any.

It seems to me that in certain instances “making the most of retirement” appears more like hard work – hiking, travelling, quilting, volunteering to look after old people (!), learning to paint, bungee jumping or even worse – decluttering your attic.

Other suggested means of diverting yourself post-retirement often include learning to play a musical instrument. But what if you were previously first violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra?

On the subject of hobbies, the comedian Jack Dee (62) claims that hobbyists’ delusions depend on the nature of their hobby. “Very few birdwatchers, he says, need validation from other people, as such an activity is its own reward. All you need to become a twitcher is a pair of binoculars, warm outdoor clothing, and a hatred of human company.”

Those more advanced in years probably possess more emotional stability than the young, and my eyes are welling up with grateful tears at that very idea. Aches and pains may increase, but cognitive decline can make us forget bad things more quickly, and isn’t it said that ignorance is bliss?

I have no wish in my declining years to ‘become a mystery shopper’ – sounds a bit like a shoplifter – or to ‘fly to a randomly selected location with no itinerary’ – that’s how I got jobs abroad – and as for becoming a ‘survivalist’, can’t I claim to be one already, at 77?

Oldies, in my opinion, are more to be envied than pitied. Those I feel sorry for are the modern gamers who develop a kind of living rigor mortis brought on by sitting for days on end crashing cars and shooting at fleeing avatars.

I’m not too proud nowadays to accept, when people ask if I need help with high shelves or self-service machines in supermarkets. My main hope for the future is to grow even older and still have all, or most, of my marbles. If not, I can always buy new marbles – as long as someone gets them down from the top shelf for me.

David Aitken, Dundee

Dear David

Thank you for writing in and sharing your thoughts on the Pleasures of Old Age. Very witty.

I must admit I’m always asking people to get things down from the top shelf when I’m out shopping and getting help at the self-service check out machines. Always best to have a sense of humour about it!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Almond Cake

Hello from Dorset!

Hi, I’m Sarah and I live in Wimborne in lovely Dorset. I have been enjoying reading others letters so thought I would send one in too.

I would love to share some photos of some recent bakes I have made over the last few weeks, not so good for the hips but great for enjoyment!

Chocolate Cake

I have had issues with anxiety the past year and it affected my ability to get out, especially with dealing with crowds and public places.

I was worried I would end up becoming confined to my house and for a long while, time stood still and I was unable to get out of what seemed like a dark place.

I slowly started to bake and then when the weather turned for the better, I started to garden.

It lifted my spirits an enormous amount and I can say that it has done wonders for the soul. I’m now able to be out and about again and slowly getting back to ‘normal’ me.

Mermaid Cupcakes

I know there are others who suffer with their mental health & wellbeing (often silently) and wanted to share that you are not alone and that focusing your attention on a hobby or even getting out in the garden really can make such a difference.

Be kind to yourself daily and just know that things do get better x

Sarah Searle, Dorset

Dear Sarah

I am so sorry to hear you have had issues with anxiety, but very pleased to learn that you have been enjoying baking and it has lifted your spirits.

Your cakes look delicious and so much fun to make. Thank you for your words of kindness and encouragement to Sixtyplusurfers readers.

Stay happy and enjoy the Spring weather and good things to come.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Lockdown meant I retired early from my photography business. With no clients to photograph, my husband relocated his business to my studio. To begin with I felt very lost, so I turned my hand to gardening instead.

I hadn’t picked up my camera for a few years until my son won a competition for a photoshoot for his dogs. Unfortunately he couldn’t afford to travel with the dogs and stay overnight as it wasn’t local. He asked me if I would take some similar photos.

After dusting down my lights we set up in my sitting room which is much smaller than my studio and hoped the dogs wouldn’t mind the flashing lights. I practiced on some neighbours’ dogs and then it was my Grandpuppies turn.

It wasn’t easy and I take my hat off to people who make a living from pet photography. These are the photos my son and daughter in law chose. They have them printed on aluminium which works well with the colours.

However, what I did find is that as much fun as it was, I was exhausted by the end of it and then putting all the equipment away confirmed that I couldn’t do this on a daily basis anymore. So although I might have stopped a couple of years early, I know it was the right decision to retire.

I am 65 in May and currently sowing seeds and looking forward to a garden full of flowers which I will probably photograph on my phone.

Alison Crown, Maidenhead

Dear Alison

Thank you writing in and sharing your beautiful photos of your Grandpuppies.

How wonderful that you were able to rediscover your love of photography, set up your camera and equipment again, and have fun taking pictures.

Although you had fun, it sounds like you have made the right decision to retire and enjoy taking photos on your phone. You can still take some wonderful pictures on most mobile phones.

And now you can enjoy photographing your garden and other beautiful things around you. Take care.

Here is my handy tip. Keep your after sun in the fridge, it will cool you down quickly. Just don’t eat it by mistake!

Jane Whitaker, Kent

Dear Jane

Thank you for sending in your photo and handy tip.

That’s a great tip for the hot weather. Although it does look a bit like a delicious bottle of mayonnaise!

We would love to from other readers with your handy tips.

Star Letter Winner!

Our Star Letter

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Christine Edwards

I only just discovered you this morning and absolutely love everything about this online magazine.

I’m writing in for a chance to win the NOMO bundle. My adorable grandson, David has been diagnosed with FPIES. (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis). He was diagnosed just after starting on solid foods.

It’s a food allergy that make him allergic to so many simple, normal foods, such as bread, eggs, chocolate, chicken, anything that may contain even slight traces of dairy, soy, chicken etc. The list is endless and makes it pretty difficult to manage, but…

HE LOVES NOMO. It’s the only type of sweet treat he can have, other vegan chocolates contain coconut oil which he can’t have.

He had very serious bouts of vomiting in the early days before my daughter discovered what the problem was. He’s 3 years old now and is going into hospital in London next week for a supervised/managed dairy trial.

We would love to receive this bundle for our brave, beautiful boy. I’ve included photos of him on his pram walk.

Thank you all.

Christine Edwards, Colchester

Dear Christine

Thank you for writing in and telling us about your grandson, David and sharing the gorgeous photographs.

It sounds like he is going through a tough time with his allergies. I hope the supervised/managed dairy trial is able to help and he is more settled in his diet.

We are delighted to tell you that you are the winner of the Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter Competition.

Your prize is a NOMO Easter Goody Bundle. I hope David enjoys it. He is absolutely adorable.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Anne Chisolm

This year is a very special year for us (Anne and John). John has recently celebrated his 85th Birthday and we enjoyed a lovely cream tea at a local restaurant.

We are also looking forward to a trip to Brighton to visit family and to celebrate my 65th. To top the year off nicely it is our 25th Wedding Anniversary in August. What a wonderful year of celebrations!

When we’re not celebrating special occasions, we spend our time with our three rescue dogs, Teddy, Milo and Bonnie. They certainly keep us active and busy every day of the year!

Anne Chisholm, Nottinghamshire

Dear Anne

Many congratulations on your 65th birthday, John’s 85th birthday and your 25th wedding anniversary. That’s a wonderful year of celebrations.

Thank you for sending in your lovely photographs of your recent tea and your cute little dogs. They look so much fun and I can see they bring you a lot of joy.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I recently moved to West Yorkshire after spending most of my life in Suffolk.

It was a childhood dream to live in Yorkshire and after lots of research realised that it was the Holmfirth area that would be ideal as this was where Last Of The Summer Wine was filmed.

I eventually chose Meltham to live as it is a lovely town with a wonderful community.

It also has shops within walking distance as well as amazing views of the surrounding moorland.

I am so pleased to have made the move and am looking forward to spending many more wonderful years here!

Jed Harper, West Yorkshire

Dear Jed

Thank you for writing in and telling us about your move to Meltham and for sending in your beautiful photos.

It looks like a lovely place to live, especially if the town has a friendly community, you have stunning views and good shops that you can get to.

We would love to hear from other readers about where you live and why you like it so much.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Tapestry

This month I have been mostly confined to my bed so I have been doing the one thing I can do from here: needlework!

I have not been up to focusing on intricate embroidery, so I have been beavering away on a cross stitch kit I bought last year. It’s a stocking for next Christmas and I’m close to finishing!

I love needle crafts because on one end of the spectrum there is so much scope for creativity and on the other end it’s akin to colouring in with thread – so versatile depending on my health.

The pictures shows my progress so far.

Jessica Campbell, Fareham

Dear Jessica

I am so sorry to hear you have been confined to bed, and we wish you a speedy recovery.

Thank you for sharing the photo of your embroidery, it looks fabulous. I love all the beautiful wild animals. I’m so glad to hear that it is bringing you so much happiness and lifting your spirits.

We would love to hear from other Sixtyplusurfers readers who are enjoying needlework and craft projects.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

At 72 years old, I decided that I really needed to lose some weight, and being quite short (5.2) it wasn’t a good look.

The problem was that I felt a bit too old to go to the gym, even though I was told that all ages were welcome. I did go once but didn’t feel too comfortable among all those gorgeous teens, doing their stuff, in fact I left feeling older than before.

I decided then that I needed a plan, and it had to be one that I enjoyed and felt comfortable doing, because I was never a great lover of any sort of exercise. Having given it a lot of thought, I decided that the answer was staring me in the face.

I now get up about 20 minutes earlier than usual, because I still work part time. I then go into the kitchen and put on my favourite radio station, (which plays a lot of 60s music, which I love) and I exercise to my favourite music. I set my timer for 20 minutes, and do simple exercises to my music. Simple!!! Why didn’t I think of this before?

I am also watching what I eat, so it’s a win win. It means that I am now exercising regularly, and have already dropped 1 dress size. I also think that it’s really good for my health and wellbeing.

Patricia Pacewicz, High Wycombe

Dear Patricia

Thank you for writing in and telling us how you lost weight. What a great plan and so easy to do.

Gyms can be very overwhelming and exercising at home is so much easier and more enjoyable to do.

I also like to exercise before breakfast. I have a playlist of all my favourite songs saved on my phone, and have made up my own exercise and dance routine.

What do other readers do to stay in shape and keep fit? We’d love to hear from you.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Here is my recipe for Easter Bunny Pancakes. This is a fun and easy recipe that can be made for an Easter breakfast with the kids, or all year round.

Ingredients for the pancakes

150g plain flour
2 tablespoons caster sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
225ml milk
2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, plus extra for cooking

Ingredients for decoration

Whipped cream or Greek yoghurt for the bunny tails
Banana slices and blueberries for eyes
Strawberries sliced in half for ears
Raspberry or small strawberry for the nose

Method

1. Make the pancake batter. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, caster sugar, baking powder, and salt.

2. In another bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and melted butter.

3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. It’s okay if the batter is a bit lumpy.

4. Cook the pancakes. Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and brush with a little melted butter.

5. For each pancake, pour batter into the pan to form circles. For the bunny shape, you’ll need one large circle for the body, one medium circle for the head, and two small ovals for the feet. You can also make two tiny pancakes for the paws.

6. Cook until bubbles form on the surface of the pancakes, then flip and cook until golden brown on the other side.

7. Assemble the bunny pancakes. Place the large pancake on a plate for the body, then add the medium pancake on top for the head.

8. Place the two small ovals at the bottom of the large pancake to form feet, and add the tiny pancakes to the medium one for paws.

9. Use banana slices and blueberries to create the eyes, a raspberry for the nose, and sliced strawberries for the ears.

10. Finally, add a dollop of whipped cream or Greek yoghurt to the body pancake to make a fluffy tail. Enjoy!

Jade Brailsford, Northampton

Dear Jade

Thank you for sending in your Easter Bunny Pancakes recipe.

They sound delicious and so much fun for children to make and eat.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Finding worthwhile matches online requires more technique than just idle swiping. My experience of dating apps so far has been dead-end conversations, dates that never actually come to fruition, and sparkless meetings.

I used to think that the entire world of online dating for me was doomed to fail. I did like one of my matches but whereas I deleted myself from the dating app, she didn’t!

So I probably I wasn’t the “one” she was looking for. Whilst dating apps are great for many people (I have two friends who are now married after meeting online) the mental health effects can make it counterproductive for some of us by replacing the excitement of dating with anxiety and stress.

Maybe sometimes, a good old-fashioned hello is the best way forwards! I have included a picture of my retirement from the police service.

Paul  Roberts, North Wales

Dear Paul

Thank you for writing in and telling us about your experience of dating apps. It sounds very stressful.

I hope you are able to meet someone nice the ‘old fashioned’ way. Take care and wishing you all the very best.

Reader's Letter

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Thank you

I’m writing to let you know that the prize of Calmondin Tree and Mulled Wine Kit from Plants4Presents have arrived, the prize from a recent Sixtyplusurfers competition.

I’m absolutely delighted, the plant is gorgeous and we are going to look after it as well as possible.  Also, looking forward to making some mulled wine with the kit.

I have taken a picture of the prize to let you know how special it is. We’re very grateful, thank you so much.

Frances Heaton

Dear Frances

Thank you for letting me know the prize arrived safely. It looks wonderful. I hope you have fun growing the Calmondin tree and making mulled wine.

I have passed on your thanks to Plants4Presents, the sponsor of the competition.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Thank you

Nick Capaldi, You and all the Seasons

It was lovely to find out I had won the You and all the Seasons CD by Nick Capaldi.

It turned up yesterday, so I spent a rainy afternoon curled up listening to it, while reading your latest issue of Sixtyplusurfers, which I must say is excellent.

Lynda Mcglashan

Dear Lynda

Thank you for letting me know the Nick Capaldi CD arrived safely. I hope you enjoy listening to it. And thank you for your kind words about Sixtyplusurfers.

I have passed on your thanks to Lisa Davies Promotions, the sponsor of the competition.

Reader's Letter

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I complained to my partner Phil that our bedroom let too much light in and suggested black out blinds so that I could get a better night’s sleep.

He replied, “You have your own black out blinds they are called eyelids! Just close your eyes so we can get some sleep!”

How rude.

Jane Whitaker, Kent

Dear Jane

Thank you for sending in your amusing letter. How funny, and so true!

Sixtyplusurfers Competition

Win a Bundle of Astral Intensive Moisturiser

Barbara McInnes uses Astral

Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Astral to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a Bundle of Astral Intensive Moisturiser.

Astral Intensive Moisturiser has been used by mothers and grandmothers for decades and now their granddaughters are discovering the versatile and intensive cream that is all the care skin needs.

Having been tried and tested for more 70 years, many women have never used another moisturiser in their life. Astral’s formula is so effective that they’ve never had to change it.

In our free to enter competition, you can win a bundle of Astral moisturiser and see for yourself why this skincare wonder has stood the test of time!

Astral Prize Bundle

Barbara McInnis from Morecambe, pictured at the top of our competition is the world’s oldest female drummer and has joined Astral as a pin-up for the £4 beauty cream.

At 90 years of age, Barbara is the world’s oldest female drummer having picked up drumsticks for the first time at the grand old age of 89. But it’s not just her new-found love of knocking out a beat that’s helped Barbara roll back the years, Barbara swears by an active lifestyle and a pot of Astral Intensive Moisturiser that costs less than a fiver.

Barbara likes to wear her red cowgirl hat and leather jacket when she plays gigs in Morecambe pubs with groups such as the D’Ukes of Lancaster and Ukulele Band and Garstang Ukulele Group. She says she likes to “channel my inner Ringo Starr.”

Barbara McInnes

Her recipe for looking three decades younger comes down to moderation in most things, being curious, “keeping a twinkle in the eye” and sleep! But not before applying the Astral.

Astral’s new nonagenarian pin-up joins celebrities like Joanna Lumley who looks amazing at 77 and credits Astral for minimising the appearance of wrinkles. Like Barbara, Joanna has used the same moisturiser for years and swears by the multipurpose benefits.

A 200ml tub costs just £4 on Amazon and scores an average star rating of 4.7 with users saying it keeps their skin “wrinkle-free” and makes them “look younger.”

Amanda Holden (53) and Kate Beckinsale (50) also use Astral which is being hailed as a “must-have” for fans of expensive designer skincare products. However, while these premium moisturisers can set you back up to a whopping £200, a 200ml tub of Astral Intensive Moisturiser is cheaper than a cappuccino from Starbucks.

Barbara is thrilled to become Astral’s new pin-up and proud to be compared to Joanna Lumley. She says, “I think she’s fun, sophisticated, highly intelligent and a very attractive woman…and like me, she shares the secret of Absolutely Fabulous Astral!”

Astral Intensive Moisturiser was developed in 1950 and is still going strong over 70 years later. Loved across the generations, its iconic blue tub is one of the most recognisable skincare products on the shelves.

Astral Intensive Moisturiser nourishes, softens and protects skin, leaving it feeling smooth and soft to touch. Its versatile and multi-purpose formula is ideal for all skin types and can even be used to remove makeup or prep skin for tanning.

Lanolin helps to lock in your skin’s moisture, creating a protective barrier and glycerin hydrates the skin to leave your skin looking smooth and soft.

Buy Astral Intensive Moisturiser on Amazon or visit www.astralmoisturiser.co.uk for more information.

Savvy Sweets

To celebrate our Spring May June 2024 issue, Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Double ‘D’, to offer six lucky readers who join the Sixtyplusurfers Newsletter mailing list or recommend a friend to receive it the chance to win a Bundle of Savvy Sweets. Each delicious prize bundle includes eight packs of sweets with two of each flavour.

This month sees Savvy Sweets enter the UK low/no sugar sweets fray, a unique UK twist on an idea 1st born in Australia courtesy of Double ‘D’, a leading voice within guilt-free, naturally made Australian confectionery since 1920.

As a nation of voracious snackers it was inevitable that UK confectionery, like so many other evolving categories before it, would seek to add some functional wellbeing to its fixture. Currently functional sweets is a small yet thriving sub-category within UK confectionery, an increasingly nimble food arena £62 million, growing at a staggering 58% year-on-year.

Savvy Sweets Sour Cola

It makes complete sense that today in these healthier living times that great taste in isolation isn’t enough to justify shelf space.  This is a 4-strong vegan range that prides itself on being made solely on natural ingredients, only dabbling with natural, plant based sweeteners (stevia & erythritol) whilst embracing FODMAP-friendly prebiotic plant fibre and pectin which stimulates good bacteria to thrive in one’s gut.

According to Savvy Sweets spokesperson, Chris Dandridge, “We wanted to be an open book from Day 1 because we’ve never viewed great taste and nutritional integrity as mutually exclusive goals. The vision was always longevity and sustainability, not simply shuffling around unsavoury artificial sweeteners to swerve HFSS rules.

“It’s worth noting that latest data suggests that 73% of UK consumers have reduced or actively sought to reduce their sugar consumption over the last 12 months. Factor in that obesity and diabetes-related issues are estimated to cost the NHS a staggering £6 billion a year (£10 billion by 2050) and you can appreciate how the moment is ripe for populist food categories to be rethought and reconfigured.”

Savvy Sweets in its 1st incarnation will be a 4-strong range that includes:  Sour Bears, Cola Bears, Berry Bears and Fruit ‘n Cream Bears.

Confectionery appreciation that truly took off in Victorian times is deeply inset within the British psyche with 16% of the UK population stating that it is their preferred go-to treat.

Savvy’s priority groups are 4-fold:

Savvy Sweets Berry Bears

Sugar Resisters – those avoiding sugar for health reasons (weight, obesity).

Sugar Conscious – not medically restricted but keen to keep their sugar intake in check.

Health Conscious – those prioritising making constant beneficial tweaks to their weekly diets

Young Adults – those in tune with cool brands with a progressive outlook

Caring Parents – installing better eating disciplines early doors

Consider that each bag of Savvy Sweets contains less than 76 calories, only 2g of sugar and is loaded with good bacteria enhancing prebiotic plant fibre (22g).

It’s also only fair to appreciate the ‘feelgood’ upsides associated with sweets, there’s certainly positive nostalgic/feelgood associations, there’s great gifting potential and let’s not overlook those all-important ‘me-time’ moments.

Sweets remain integral to the UK treats landscape, but like all things, standing still is no excuse!
