As you probably know, we play a lot of board games in our home! Dann and I have a by-weekly board game night with all of our friends, as well as a by-weekly kids board game afternoon, at our local Geek Retreat, with our children. This last week, our board game of choice was Kingdomino. Looking at the box, I thought that this game would be a little more complex than it turned out to be, which was a pleasant surprise!
Kingdomino is a two to four player game, aimed at ages eight and above, but was very easy to understand and set up. The game itself lasted, even on the first play, under half an hour – and it became a quick set up and play again! Each player gets a castle and a castle tile, along with a token character. This castle goes on the castle tile, which is where you will build your kingdom around. Everyone is sort of bidding for land, in the way that they pick tiles. There is an inventory of tiles, that starts off face down, with a total of four tiles down. The tiles have numbers on their back and you will need to place them in a row with the lowest number on top and the highest number on the bottom.
When bidding for land, everyone will place their token on top of the tile they want, and only one person can claim a tile. For the first round, we drew the characters at random, but after that, it’s whoever got the first tile in the inventory that get’s to go next. As the first tile in line is always worth the least, this really does a great job of balancing Kingdomino. The tiles themselves are rectangles, with two portions on each one. These little portions can have the same environments or two different environments on them.
These environments come in forest, farm land, dead land, sea, and grassland. Connecting up these tiles, as long as they have a building with a crown on it, will result in points at the end of the game. Building your kingdom can only be done in a five by five grid, which is important to keep in mind, as not placing tiles strategically in this way can result in you having less tiles overall. At the end of the game, you will get to count the number of environments in each area, and then times them by the number of crowns connected to it. It’s a really simple way to score and the entire game is simple to play.
Kai enjoyed the kingdom building aspect of Kingdomino, which is always a plus. The little castle was something he enjoyed building around! Robin and Amelia quite enjoyed the bidding and placing aspects of the game, though Robin did need a little guidance, she had a good time. It’s a simple, fun game that can be played with a wide variety of ages.
This seems like a super fun game I could play with my kids. I love how engaging it is. I will check it out.

It’s bright and appealing but the best bit is that a game lasts less than half an hour.

I’ve played this game a few times. It takes a little getting used to so that the tiles come up in the right order but once that is sorted out it is great.
I like the twist on the classic game, and how it looks easy to pick up!
I like the look of Kingdomino because it looks like it will suit a spectrum of ages from young to old and I’d enjoy playing it with my kids and grandparents.
