Nick Croft

Nick Croft

Interview by Jenny Itzcovitz

Nick Croft has released his debut album, ‘Beyond Why?’ featuring wonderful songs about his life and experiences. One of seven children, he is the son of David Croft, the co-writer of some of the best loved comedy in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s including Dad’s Army, Are you Being Served? It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Hi-De-Hi! and ‘Allo Allo!’

We caught up with Nick to find out more about the album and his music. And he tells some colourful stories about his childhood among some well loved comedy stars, and what brought him to singing and entertainment.

Plus, we have included a fabulous video of Nick Croft’s new single ‘LOVE IS TOO SMALL a WORD’ for you to enjoy.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you come from?

“Thanks for your interest. I was born in London at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.

“As was the custom in those days for aspiring middle class parents, I was sent away to boarding school at the tender age of eight.”

You are the oldest of seven children and your childhood was one of glorious chaos as your parents were David Croft and Ann Callender – and your father was the co-writer of some of the best loved comedy in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s including Dad’s Army, Are you Being Served? It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Hi-De-Hi! and ‘Allo Allo!’ and many more classics – that must have been very exciting for you. What was it like growing up among such celebrity and fun?

Nick Croft

“My memories of the early days of my Dad’s shows are sporadic and chaotic with a great deal of coming and going.

“For Dad’s Army, we were allowed to go to the filming of the shows at the BBC television centre in White City on many occasions, which was exciting.

“We usually sat as a group in a side room of the bar, eating crisps and drinking coke, waiting for the grownups to finish chatting and drinking.

“Occasionally some members of the cast (usually Ian Lavender or Clive Dunn) would come and say, “Hi”, and we revelled in their attention.

“Sometimes the cast let their hair down, especially at my parents’ parties when the location filming was ‘in the can’ and I remember everyone doing the Hokey Cokey in the front room and falling about with laughter.

“For the later shows, as we got older, we were allowed in the bar and began establishing friendships.

“I have 3 beautiful, blonde sisters – Penny, Jane and Beckie, and they soon became the centre of attention. Beckie, in fact married Simon Cadell who played Jeffrey Fairbrother in Hi-di-Hi!”

Your parents’ celebrity connections brought many rewards and Eddy Grant’s chart-topping band, The Equals, played for your 16th birthday party, and your date for your 18th birthday party was Wendy Richard – Miss Brahms from Are You Being Served. We would love to hear more about this, it sounds wonderful, and very special?

“It is true that The Equals played for a joint party (my 16th and Penny’s 15th). I vividly remember the incongruity of my mother’s chandelier shaking as the boys cranked up the volume!

“My memory was inaccurate when I said that my dad arranged for Wendy Richard to be my 18th birthday dinner date – it was actually my 21st. Still, it was 50 years ago and I was very young.

“She was great company and very kind. Truth be told, I spent a large part of the evening talking with Frank Thornton as he was sitting opposite me. Most of the members of the Are You Being Served? cast were also present, and the party went on into the small hours.”

You have always been drawn to music. Who bought you your first guitar, taught you how to play it, and inspired you in your music?

Nick Croft

“My parents bought me my first guitar when I was 9, and with no YouTube available, I learnt to play by ear. My earliest lesson was from a titan of a guitarist called Davey Graham who was on my mum’s roster of talented clients.

“He took the trouble to teach me a simplified version of ‘Angie’ by The Rolling Stones while my mum was getting ready to go out for a business lunch with him. I was maybe 12 years old at the time and was suitably awestruck. He transformed my idea of what was possible on a guitar.”

Your career took you in lots of different directions, and through convention you took a City job in investment banking. What drew you to this, how long did you do this, and why did you eventually leave?

“I started working in the City as a teaboy in my school holidays for pocket money and joined that same firm when I left school. I worked there for a further 5 years.

“Although a good job with good prospects, it wasn’t right for me. I left to find something more exciting.”

You went to America and discovered the Frisbee and fell for it ‘hook, line and sinker’. This led to you entering the British Frisbee Championships which were held at half time during a Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge. That sounds great fun. Can you tell us about this? How you got to participate? And did you win the Championships?

Nick Croft

“I had discovered Frisbee whilst trying to make money for my firm in California (I said it was a good job).

“I had looked up an old school friend who was studying photography at Berkley. He was basically a Hippy and spent the balmy California nights playing Frisbee – I was entranced and on my return tried to get people interested in England.

“I did win the competition at Stamford Bridge which resulted in another trip to California for the world championship at the Rose Bowl.”

From there you spent time in California, and did various other things such as writing songs, singing in a pub, street theatre, decorating, landscape gardening, and running a water filtration business. This must have been an experimental and challenging time for you. What did you learn from it all?

“I spent the next 10 years doing all sorts of things to earn money and having fun. Life offered me many opportunities and I took some. That’s when I started writing songs, but my music never took precedence.

“Frisbee offered the occasional gig like a half time show for QPR at Loftus Road, some demonstration work for Southwark council and sporadic advertising. I also  joined a street theatre group called ‘Nomads and Fools’ run by a wonderful clown called Chris Lynam and enjoyed some memorable times all over England and a few visits to Europe.

“I also busked all over London playing sax, guitar and accordion. We were employed for a couple of years by Terry Ellis as Festival FooIs at the embryonic Festival of Mind and Body in Olympia.

“I met many people there who were into alternative lifestyles and I developed an interest in many of their ideas and did a few courses in massage and martial arts. During this time you could say that I was ‘footloose and fancy free’.”

In the mid-90’s, you and your brother John acquired a recording studio in Camden Town. How did you buy it and equip it, and make it your own?

Nick Croft

“My brother John had been working as a sound designer and engineer, touring all over Europe with huge shows like 42nd Street. He thought it would be fun to set up a studio in London.

“We had recorded an ambient album called ‘Dreamfields’ under the name of ‘Innersense’ and it was moderately successful. Four subsequent albums followed, (recently remastered and available on most digital platforms). The studio in Camden Town was great fun and a story on its own.”

Now you had a recording studio, you could make records and create your own songs. And you have recently released an album ‘Beyond Why?’ How did you write the songs and put it all together?

Nick Croft 'Beyond Why?'

“The first line of my new album goes, “It all started out in Camden Town – my brother’s  bar was closing down, my love was lost so now I’m found beyond the comfort zone.”

“(It was my brother Tim that had the bar). The rest of the album goes on to describe some episodes of my life in song. In those times I had made some demos, but the market had been for Punk and Dance which wasn’t my style.

“After a few glorious years we closed the studio. By now I had two wonderful children, Elena and David, and my priorities were changing, so I concentrated on parenting, still playing occasionally in pubs and lounge piano in a Covent Garden bar. I tried my hand at ‘proper’ jobs like decorating and landscaping and that kept me busy and solvent until around 2000.

“I then moved to Suffolk as my Dad was unwell. John and I still had equipment from the old studio, and we set up in his spare bedroom, recording in our spare time. I was still playing, but mostly for friends and family.

“I had no particular ambition, but was still enjoying my life immensely. My brother Tim had been running a café and I took over from him in 2006 for about 5 years.

“Both my kids helped me immensely in the café, especially on weekends and during the holidays, as did some of their friends, first jobs for most of them. My nephews and nieces also pitched in. Many of my customers were senior citizens and I enjoyed their stories of lives well lived. It was a real privilege to be so involved in the community.

“My father died in 2011 and my mother in 2016. I had a kidney failure that year and have been recovering ever since. My musical needs were now fulfilled by playing in a worship band at St Marys in Honey Hill, Bury St Edmunds (Church of England). This has also served to reaffirm my Christian faith. I still play to this day and really enjoy the fellowship.”

Which musicians and assistance did you enlist to help you make the album? And what did you enjoy most about the creative process?

“My brother John had been working in Industrial Property and was talking to a colleague about his love of music in general and my songwriting in particular. By an amazing turn of fate, the colleague’s brother was Cameron Jenkins, a renowned producer who was working at Real World studios in Bath.

“My brother gave him a call and we sent him some demos. He liked them, chose a few and our current project ‘Beyond Why?’ was born.

“Cameron suggested recording in Analogue with some great musicians he knew including Charlie Jones as MD and bass player, Rob Bryan on drums and percussion, Dan Temmink on pianos and organ, Melvin Duffy on pedal steel and guitars.

“I cannot praise them highly enough. They lifted my songs to a new dimension and Cameron’s production was exquisite. Further details are available on our website by clicking on www.wwm.co.uk/artists/nick-croft/about-nick-croft

“It worked out so well that we decided to release it. Hallelujah!”

How did the album get its title, ‘Beyond Why?’ and what is the record’s theme and essential concept?

Nick Croft

“I can verify that age is just a number. We’re still the same as we were inside. I feel that there is a space for people of my age to share their life experience and continue to contribute to society – a counterbalance to the emphasis currently given to youth culture

“In human terms, the wisdom of age is paramount. After all, everyone is getting older, not younger. When I was younger, I wrote ‘Why’, the second track, but that question seems to have evaporated with time, hence, ‘Beyond Why?’.”

How would you describe your style of music?

My music is middle of the road with an edge.”

You have recently released a fabulous new single from the album, ‘LOVE IS TOO SMALL a WORD. Can you tell us about the song and its message?

Nick Croft

“The single LOVE IS TOO SMALL a WORD was one of the first tunes I wrote.

“The lyrics, full of hope, were penned by my good friend and collaborator, Tim Nash with whom I have written many songs.

“It was chosen as a single because it had a lighthearted country feel, good for Summer driving.”

Will you be touring or performing to promote the album? What do you have planned?

“I have no tour planned as yet, but would love to make another album soon. It’s quite difficult to schedule as all the musicians, though willing, are currently busy.”

Do you have a special message for Sixtyplusurfers readers?

Nick Croft

“Go for it and continue to be patient. And while you are waiting, be kind – and if you are able to – trust in The Lord.

“Thanks again for your interest.”

Gareth Dunlop Album

New Album Planned
for Gareth Dunlop

Gareth Dunlop

Belfast’s celebrated pop artist and acclaimed producer, Gareth Dunlop, is set to unveil his highly anticipated third studio album, ‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’, under the banner of Zenith Café. The album, scheduled for release on June 14th, promises to capture attention with its emotive storytelling and dynamic arrangements, highlighted by the next single ‘All We’ll Ever Need’. Adding to the excitement, Dunlop will be headlining his own UK tour this June.  As well as supporting Irish troubadour Damien Dempsey at the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin.

‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’, invites listeners into the warm embrace of home – the cherished moments with loved ones and the nostalgic echoes of days gone by. Departing in sound from his previous works, Dunlop elevates his narratives with a full band, rich production, and thrilling performances.

Each track offers a glimpse of personal reflections; from the communal solace depicted in the opening single ‘Church’, to the serene respite found in the closer ‘All We’ll Ever Need’, the album ultimately emphasises the importance of cherishing what truly matters in life.

Gareth Dunlop - All We'll Ever Need

The record continues to explore themes of nostalgia in ‘Back Yard’, the aftermath of misplaced trust in ‘Naive’, and the uplifting anthem ‘I Don’t Feel You’. From the wistful musings of ‘The Rest of Ever’ to the empowering anthem of resilience in ‘Go Down Swinging’, Dunlop navigates the complexities of emotion with poignancy and depth, ultimately emphasising the importance of cherishing what truly matters in life.

Written during a period of intense creativity, ‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’ was born amidst Dunlop’s journey through Americana festivals, songwriting sessions in Nashville, and tours alongside notable artists such as Lucy Spraggan, Foy Vance, and Bonnie Raitt, as well as contributing songs to the upcoming feature documentary about American author William Faulkner.

Amidst these whirlwind experiences, Dunlop aimed to reconnect with his own voice and found himself longing to hit the pause button. Dunlop defies expectations with ‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’, as it blends cinematic grandeur with intimate vulnerability.

Gareth Dunlop

Speaking on the record, Gareth notes that, “On ‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’, I wanted to explore how those everyday sights and occurrences can send you flying back in time – the daydreams and the thoughts about the future. I feel like we have limited time here on Earth, and we should make the most of it.”

A musical journey that has been nothing short of extraordinary, Dunlop’s talent has been endorsed by a remarkable list of legendary artists that he has had the chance to perform with, including Van Morrison, Snow Patrol, James Morrison, Stereophonics, Bonnie Raitt, Foy Vance, and Jeff Beck, among others.

With a dedicated following of over 130,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, his prowess as an artist continues to enthral audiences worldwide. Notably, his track ‘Wrap Your Arms Around Me’ stands as a testament to this, amassing almost 5 million streams.

Dunlop’s previous releases have become a soundtrack to life, featuring on both the big and small screens. His songs have found their way into the hit TV series ‘Nashville’, among other popular shows such as ‘Lucifer’, ‘This Is Us’, ‘Bones’, and ‘Suits’. In addition to TV, his work has been a part of major motion pictures like ‘The Best of Me’, ‘Safe Haven’, and ‘The Visitor’, as well as gracing TV commercials for Disney and Subaru, solidifying his status as a versatile and in-demand artist.

Gareth Dunlop

His debut album, ‘No. 79’, captured the hearts of listeners with its raw fusion of folk and soul, even securing an Album of the Week slot on the RTE1, while ‘Animal’, his sophomore album, showcased a vibrant blend of synth-pop influences, reflecting his evolving musical style.

Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, and Pink Floyd, Dunlop’s journey commenced at 14, as he strummed his guitar and shared his melodies across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and the UK.

His exceptional talent was recognised with the Young Songwriter of the Year award in Belfast in 2011, catapulting him into the international music scene and leading to collaborations with esteemed songwriters in Nashville.

As the curtain rises on 2024, the stage is set for an unparalleled chapter for this celebrated synth-pop artist.

William Michael Morgan

New EP from William Michael Morgan

William Michael Morgan

Country neo-traditionalist William Michael Morgan is bringing ‘70s swagger back to Nashville with his brand new, six-song EP ‘Onto Something’, released on all platforms via ONErpm Nashville.

Morgan says, “I couldn’t be more excited to get this EP out. Tracking with (multiple CMA, ACM and Grammy Award-winning producer) Keith Stegall was an incredible experience, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we put together.”

“William’s new music is a welcome addition to the increasingly popular neo-traditional movement that websites like Saving Country Music have credited him with starting,” notes Ryan Cunningham, A&R director of Country Music for ONErpm. “This EP will stand out amid the pop influences that currently define modern country.”

And there’s plenty to notice. The two pre-released tracks, the mid-tempo “In Walked You” with its breezy barroom vibe. In walked you on a Saturday night/Neon blue lightin’ up your eyes, countered by the wistfulness of the bittersweet “Not Letting Go”. We’ve gone too far to get back to where we were before, sets the tone for a free-flowing, six-song set with fiddle and steel guitar licks evocative of the lyrical stylings of decades past.

“Country music is alive and well,” states one of Nashville’s most celebrated men behind the scenes and multi-award-winning producer Keith Stegall. “It lives and breathes when William Michael Morgan picks up a guitar and tells us stories of love lost and honky-tonks found. Country music at its finest.”

Morgan’s current single, “Pour A Little Whiskey On It,” is like a salve for the EP’s more vulnerable moments. When he croons, If it’s gonna be a lonely night/Might as well put her memory on ice, you know what’s coming – this is a straight-up drinking song that seeks to right the wrongs with every cowboy (and cowgirl)’s favourite libation, “Take this heartache to town, and pour a little whiskey on it.”

Onto Something by William Michael Morgan

The EP’s release will be capped off by the premiere of Morgan’s music video for the track “Pour A Little Whiskey On It”, which is coming soon.

Morgan and Stegall round the album out with the title track, a gentle nod to the promise of a new relationship; the regret-tinged “She Don’t Like Old Country”; and a goodbye/destination song that, despite the lyrics, isn’t quite as sad as it could be – and maybe that’s the point.

Morgan is managed by Joe Carter and Mike Taliaferro of Carter and Co.; booking is handled by The Kinkead Entertainment Agency, Nashville.

Kerri Watt Sings Country

Kerri Watt Releases ‘Predictable’ Single

Kerri Watt

Following a sold-out show at the iconic Listening Room in Nashville, Glaswegian  singer-songwriter Kerri Watt returns with new country-imbued single ‘Predictable’. Building on the Americana “vintage, Quentin Tarantino-style” (Sunday Times) landscape of her acclaimed 2021 debut album Neptune’s Daughter, ‘Predictable’ sees Kerri fully embrace country music, ahead of a string of highly-anticipated performances.

Produced by her Nashville-based brother and collaborator Fraser Watt, ‘Predictable’ is the product of Kerri’s immersion into the city’s historic music scenes. Through performances in its iconic, intimate venues to writing sessions with local artists, the rich cultural tapestry of the country music capital takes an undeniable presence on the track, conjuring a warm atmosphere rich in catchy hooks and a distinctively western guitar.

Kerri Watt

With Kerri’s signature soaring vocals and heartfelt meditations on love, ‘Predictable’ is a song about shunning naive expectations that relationships must be dramatic and chaotic to thrive, and instead exists as an ode to a safe, calm and predictable romance that comes alive at night.

Kerri explains, “It’s a driving, moody country number inspired by my long term relationship. Having craved the wild uncertainty of life and love in my early 20s, I now love the ‘predictability’ of knowing exactly who I’m coming home to each day and just what makes each of us happy. However… At night when the lights go down and it’s just the two of us alone, I love to reconnect with that wild side.”

Kerri Watt

Over the past couple of years, Kerri’s life as an artist changed dramatically when she became a mother. With touring off the table for a while, Kerri began writing for the big screen and is currently developing an original musical animation with Timeless Films. In 2023, Kerri also became an official ‘Song Suffragette’ in Nashville – a collective that supports and champions female songwriters. (Fellow suffragettes include Kelsea Ballerini & Lainey Wilson.) Kerri went on to host a rare Song Suffragettes show in London at The Camden Club last Summer.

At home on stage, Kerri has opened for the likes of Coldplay and Celine Dion, and performed in some of the most iconic venues, from The Royal Albert Hall to The London Palladium, as well as C2C (where she’ll make a highly-anticipated return this March) and Cambridge Folk Fest. Her 2021 debut album ‘Neptune’s Daughter’, with its delicate musings on love and life garnered the attention of Bob Harris, the AMA UK and Keith Urban – with whom she duetted.

Kerri Watt

Kerri creates songs that captivate and inspire in their wise and vulnerable interpretations of the world around her – partly indebted to her songwriting inspirations, Sheryl Crow and Van Morrison.

Though hailing from Glasgow, she spent time in the States as a teenager, where exposure to American music heavily informed her sonic palette. There, she was introduced to a world of blues, gospel, country and folk that felt worlds away from her Scottish roots. This scrapbook of musical influences permeates her diaristic approach to songwriting – now furthered with a whole-hearted embrace of country.

Kerri Watt, Predictable

Her first single of 2024, ‘Predictable’, kicks off what’s sure to be an inspiring year of new music, live performances and a spattering of exciting film and theatre projects for Kerri. Back in March, she took to the stage at C2C, Europe’s biggest country music festival, for three highly-anticipated performances.

In the Summer, Kerri Watt joins the Over The Hill Festival line-up as a headline act on 24th August.

Ringo says, “Linda made me a great EP – she produced it in her studio and then sent me the tracks and I added the drumming and my vocals”

Ringo Starr, Scott-Robert-Ritchie

Ringo adds, “February Sky is great – very moody – but since Linda wrote these specifically for me – it of course has to have a positive peace & love element.”

“Found the missing pieces

“That were vacant to the eye

“Well I had enough of February sky”

His music has transcended time and his voice continues to reach out to people now, serving to transport and inspire, to embrace and to provoke feelings and emotions…ingredients that are no doubt the essence of his long-lasting success.

Nik Kershaw Summer Tour

Nik Kershaw and his Band Intimate Tour

Nik Kershaw

Nik Kershaw and his fabulous band are pleased to announce intimate festival warm-up shows at O2 Academy, Oxford on Friday 28th June, Epic in Norwich Saturday 29th June, and Roadmender in Northampton on Friday 12th July.

There will be a distinct lack of dance moves, lasers, pyrotechnics, Jazz hands or anything remotely to do with “showbusiness”.

Nik Kershaw says, “Very little sartorial effort will be made (minimal sequins or spandex). Just expect a great band, playing great songs, up close and in your face. It might get sweaty!”

Just Hitz – You know the ones: Wouldn’t it be Good, The Riddle, I won’t let the sun go down on me, Dancing Girls, Wide Boy, Human Racing, Don Quixote, yada, yada, yada.

And other Bitz, highlights from Nik’s 9 studio albums and his career as a songwriter. Maybe even the odd cheeky cover version. Who knows?

Don’t miss this rare chance to see the man once described by Elton John as “the best songwriter of his generation.”

Nik Kershaw June & July 2024 shows include:

Friday 28th June, Oxford O2 Academy

Saturday 29th June, Norwich Epic Studios

Friday 12th July, Northampton Roadmender

Graham McGregor Smith

Graham Releases Road to Anywhere

Graham McGregor-Smith

East On 36 Records are extremely proud to announce the release of singer songwriter Graham McGregor-Smith’s debut album, Road To Anywhere.

Collaborating with producer, Julian Hinton (who has worked with an illustrious array of legends including Trevor Horn, Seal and Rod Stewart), McGregor-Smith has crafted a set of sublime songs that seamlessly blurs the boundaries between cool jazz and classic pop.

Having recently received a rapturous reception at a string of prestigious London shows and a raft of radio airplay for his first single, ‘I Could Have Cried Over You’, McGregor-Smith looks set to make a huge impact with Road To Anywhere.

Graham McGregor-Smith

Born in rural Worcestershire and raised on a musical diet of jazz, blues and pop, Graham McGregor-Smith enjoyed a successful business career before facing up to the inescapable fact that his teenage passion for songwriting burned as brightly as ever.

Together with a supporting cast of world class jazz musicians, he began to record the songs that would eventually go on to make up his first album.

McGregor-Smith explains, “In my career, I always suffered from a huge sense of imposter syndrome, yet when I am making music there is no such feeling – only an overwhelming sense of joy.

“It took me a long time to admit it, but I have been building up to this album all my life.”

Graham McGregor-Smith Road to Anywhere

Stirring up an ear-watering cocktail that evokes everyone from Frank Sinatra and João Gilberto through to Gilbert O’Sullivan and Jimmy Webb, Road To Anywhere is shot through with a classic, ineffably moving quality that’s as rare as hen’s teeth.

Graham says, “I’m a man of a certain age navigating all the ups and downs of life. Writing these songs, I was extremely conscious of the fact that popular music has always been dominated by songs about youth, young love…I love you and you don’t love me.

“This is an unashamedly romantic album that addresses the realities of the world from the perspective of a man who has lived a full life. I knew I had to find a different language to what has invariably formed the lingua franca of pop.

“Once I dived into the songwriting process, I realised that there were precious few examples of artists who wrote about life and love from the perspective of middle-age, and I was inspired by the idea of covering territory that was largely uncharted.”
