Celebrate National Red Squirrel Week - Win a Squirrel Feeder & Food (CLOSED)

Submitted by tpf_kirsty on Mon, 2015-09-28 07:15

Hello everyone!  How was your weekend, any nice wins to report?  A few nice bits and pieces here including a Playmobil set which I will squirrel away for my youngest at Christmas, a Dreamworks magazine from Sun Perks, a bottle of Headrin head lice treatment (not glamorous but practical all the same) and a cuddly owl toy from a Twitter comp!  The Christmas cupboard has begun at least, and I am seeing lots of fab Christmas competitions already.  Have you started comping for Christmas?

Autumn has certainly arrived here on the island and we have been enjoying some lovely weekend walks along the coastline, on the cliffs and through the woods.  One thing we are never short of here on the Isle of Wight is beautiful scenery and wildlife!  In particular as a family we are huge fans of squirrels, and red ones especially.  In point of fact there are no grey squirrels here on the Island and it is an offence to introduce greys to the Island – it is a conservation habitat for red squirrels.  Red squirrels are much more timid and difficult to spot than greys we have found, and like to play hide and seek when you try and take their photo in the woods.

Did you know there is even a National Red Squirrel Week?  Well there is and it is this week: 28th September – 4th October 2015.  Across the country people are being asked to get involved with projects set up to help our furry, nut-loving friends.  Head over to The Red Squirrel Week page at the Wildlife Trust website and find out how you can get involved locally in conservation projects and activities.

In celebration of this important week here at The PrizeFinder we are giving away a fabulous squirrel-themed bundle in our monthly competition, open exclusively to members.  I will choose one winner at random after the closing date of Sunday 4th October 2015 at 23:59 who will receive a flip top heavy duty wooden squirrel feeder and 6kg of squirrel food from Ark Wildlife – perfect for helping your local squirrel friends through the cold months to come!  The durable timber squirrel feeder features a platform for the squirrels to sit on, lifting the lid to retrieve the food.  The specially formulated squirrel food includes sunflower seeds, peanuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts and no wheat fillers – certain to keep the squirrels coming back to your garden time after time and off the bird feeders too!  To join in simply leave me a comment below and tell me what your favourite garden visitor is, be it a bird or an animal – obviously mine would be a red squirrel or maybe a hedgehog.  You need to be registered with The PrizeFinder and logged into your account to enter; one entry per person and one winner will be chosen at random.

Happy comping and lots of Lucky Dust to you all!

Kirsty x

Just love all the little sparrows that come everyday at the same time to eat the grubs and things of the garden wall.

We have a young red fox sitting on our wall in our garden. We live in a small village and our house overlooks a field full of long winter corn.
My husband thinks that it has just left the den to explore, under cover of the long corn.
My daughter has been watching it from the window, and has loved every minute of it :D

We do have squirrels in our garden, along with hedgehogs and an old fox regularly.
But, robins, are our favourite. They actually hop into our hall when the door is open.
This prize would be great to help keep the robins happy during the winter months, too.

We have a heron and have found it a couple of times delving in the pond thankfully our chickens are pretty alert and have been noisy so we saved the fish. We also have pheasants and a nasty fox that only a few months bag managed to remove four of our hens and leave us with a pile of feathers :(

Occasionally we have a woodpecker in our garden and that is really exciting. We have a large apple tree and it is a haven for lots of birds and I love them all, except for those darn pigeons!

I would love for badgers to visit our garden. They are such secretive animals it would be lovely if they felt confident enough to get close.

we very occasionally get a woodpecker in our garden which is fab, as they look so majestic. I have just started teaching in a new school and we get red squirrels in the playground, I was all excited as I pointed it out to my class, who were non plussed as they say they see them all the time.

We had a little visitor in the house not so long ago. One of my cats had caught a Harvest Mouse and brought it into the house. He then proceeded to drop it so it escaped. It was in the house for about 4 days, until another one of my cats caught it overnight and left it on the carpet for me to find it in the morning!

My favourite visitor to the garden is all the different birds; only today we saw a woodpecker in a tree at the bottom of the garden. Also, love being out with our cats who love to play with a stick.

Last night on our night vision camera one of our wild hedgehogs (who is blind in one eye), called Iris, came into the garden with her little baby. We have called her Pip. She is tiny and is very speedy. She is very cute. We have 3 homes for hedgehogs in our garden and given them special hedgehog food and water every night. We also have Ernie, Barney, Harley, Womble and Squidge visit and we record them getting up to mischief every night!
