Win a meal for two with drinks at Faber restaurant in Hammersmith

This May we're delighted to have teamed up with Faber restaurant in Hammersmith, west London as they offer one lucky reader the chance to win lunch or dinner for two with drinks.

Jonathan Ray, The Spectator’s drinkseditor, says: 'The ground floor of a Victorian mansion block by Hammersmith roundabout might seem an unpromising spot for a restaurant but, having dodged through the traffic to get there, I found it a light-filled haven of culinary joy.

The thing is, once inside Faber, you can’t hear any traffic at all and the fact that it’s seconds from Hammersmith Tube means that it’s a cinch to get to from wherever you are in London. It took me barely 25 minutes door to door from Spectator Towers the other day.

And, gosh, it would be worth it for a journey ten times as long, for Faber is that rarity, a top quality, sensibly priced fish & seafood restaurant with (its name comes from the fish, Zeus Faber, better known as John Dory or St. Pierre), that you’ll want to go back to the very next day.

The perfectly named Executive Chef, Ollie Bass (formerly of Quo Vadis), has devised a ridiculously enticing menu – largely of fish but including meat and vegetarian dishes too – sourced mainly from the coasts of these islands. There’s à la carte and a daily blackboard, and my guest and I made short work of such dishes as BBQ Orkney scallop with cauliflower & pastis purée; grilled Cornish cod cheek skewer & tartare sauce; mussels with white wine shallot & cream sauce and whole grilled Dover sole.

Nearly all the fish (English shore fish only, by the way, so no tuna or farmed salmon) comes direct from Cornwall each day and is as fresh as can be. Faber works with ethical suppliers only, such as Portland Shellfish, Maldon Oyster Co, Isle of Wight Tomatoes, Coombeshead Farm Bakery, ensuring that everything on the menu is fresh, sustainably sourced and supportive of the local economy. And in a bid to remain as carbon neutral as possible they endeavour to ensure all deliveries are made via electric vehicles.

The drinks, too, follow the coastal theme, with seaside spirits (95 per cent of which are British) sloshing around some delectable cocktails, such as the sugar kelp old-fashioned made with Wrecking Coast rye whisky and the absurdly moreish Bloody Mary made with Holy Grass vodka. The impeccably sourced wines are divided on the list into coastal and inland vineyards and include such highlights as Chapel Down’s Kit’s Coty Chardonnay from Kent and the Impero Blanc de Pinot Noir from Italy.

We ate and drank like kings and were loath to leave Faber’s warm, cossetting embrace and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Enter this competition for lunch or dinner for two at Faber and prepare to be smitten. Good luck!'

Terms and conditions: Competition closes on 31 May 2024. Winner to receive a voucher for two to enjoy lunch or dinner plus one cocktail per person on arrival and one bottle of house wine for the table. Any additional dishes or beverages to be purchased at winner’s expense. Prize must be redeemed within 6 months of winning. Booking available Sunday to Thursday for either lunch or dinner.
