Pin & Win: comping on Pinterest

Have you signed up for Pinterest yet? Lots of companies are jumping on the bandwagon and running their promotions on the site, so it offers an opportunity for really low entry - and fun - competitions!

Pinterest is a collection of virtual pinboards, where you can create your own and browse other people's boards. To sign up to Pinterest, first you need to 'Request an Invite' at www.pinterest.com. It may take a few days for you to get an invite - check your junk folder for it!

On Pinterest you can Pin images (and videos) onto your Boards - either Repinned from other boards, Pinned from a website, or uploaded yourself. You can Follow, Comment and Mention as you would on Facebook, and can opt to receive email notifications if anyone has Followed or Mentioned you.

There are several ways a promoter can run a competition on Pinterest – but as the site is still relatively new, there are different styles of giveaways popping up all the time:

• Contribute to a promoter's board - Follow a Board, and the promoter adds you as a contributor. You can then upload a Pin as an entry to a competition.

• Create your own board - Promoters will ask you to pin a minimum amount of items from their own Boards or website, and either leave a link to your board as a comment on their competition Pin, or email them a link!

• Follow and Repin - Follow a particular Board (or all their boards) and then Repin a specific competition image, or your choice of prize image. It's very important to Repin from the ORIGINAL board rather than a Repin (look for 'Repinned from....' above the pin, then click the link) - if you repin a comper's entry that WON'T count!

• Voting Competitions - The Pin with the most likes or Repins wins

There's lots more advice on the Pinterest Help pages - and I've also posted a more detailed introduction to Pinterest comping on my SuperLucky blog.

We've listed a few Pinterest comps here on The PrizeFinder site if you want to give it a try - for all these you need to create a board in order to enter. Don't let that put you off though - it's loads of fun and nice to try something different! Try and choose unusual items or upload your own pins to make your entry stand out - happy pinning!
